The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's standard screener. 8 yes/no items. A score ≥3 has 84% sensitivity for moderate-to-severe OSA.

Epworth (5 items)

Daytime sleepiness scale (Johns MW, Sleep, 1991). We use 5 items. ≥11 indicates excessive sleepiness — a key OSA marker.

Witnessed apnea boost

The single most predictive item is witnessed pauses in breathing. We weight it accordingly — it's the question your doctor will ask first.

Rule-based scoring

Your risk score is computed by rule, not by AI guesswork. Gemini only writes the plain-language explanation. The number is deterministic.

Honest answers

Is Sawmill a diagnosis?

No. Sawmill is an educational screener built on validated questionnaires. It is not a substitute for a sleep study or your doctor. If your screener returns High or Severe — or you marked witnessed pauses in breathing — please contact a sleep specialist.

Is the AI making up the score?

No. Your risk score is computed by deterministic rule (STOP-BANG ≥3 = intermediate, ≥5 = high; Epworth ≥11 = excessive; witnessed apnea adds a weighted boost). The AI only generates the plain-language explanation. Same answers in = same number out.

Do I need an app?

No. Sawmill is a website. The journal is a PDF you print from your home printer. No download, no account.

Will my doctor take this seriously?
